Departmental Activities

The Department of Philosophy organizes the Annual Cultural Programme on the 5th September of every year where the students of the Department enact  short plays on Philosophy, Logic like a play enacted on the script called 'kothay kothay logic' written by the legendary philosopher Late Dr. Ramaprosad Das. The programme is enriching for both the staff and students alike as it highlights the rich cultural heritage of the Department. The short plays are followed by dance performance by the students of the Department.

The Department of Philosophy also organizes a seminar every year. This year it organized a seminar on Jacques Derrida in Collaboration with the Department of Chemistry and Mathematics on the 9th January 2018. Prof. and Head of the Department of Philosophy, University of Calcutta presented a lecture on the philosophy of Derrida entitled 'Structuralism to Poststructuralism: A Brief Overview'.  Besides there were other eminent speakers on Madam Cutie and Prashanta Mahalonobis. On the 5th of September 2018 another seminar was organized by the Department where Dr. Jhuma Chakroborty of the Department of Philosophy of Jadavpur University presented a special lecture on Feminist Philosophy.

The Department of Philosophy organized a counseling session in Collaboration with Value Education Cell, Health Club and Human Rights Cell on 12th March 2018. Dr. Manojit Ghosh, Head of the Department of Economics presented a heart touching account of how children face abuse and how The POCSO Act protects children from such abuse. He also highlighted the need and means of women empowerment. Then Prof. Nemai Chand Dan of the Department of History gave a lucid and attractive lecture on Value Education and it's role in our lives stressing the need to realize the importance of life, self worth, self confidence and belief in oneself. Next Dr. Sutapa Ray, Head of the Department of Philosophy counselled the students on the need for Counseling in the present scenario of unrest all around. She presented a few case studies to show how inability to maintain mental balance in trying times is increasingly​ leading to cases of suicide, violence and abnormal psychological behaviour among the youth. She stressed on the need to do something for making your mind strong enough to tackle life's problems as and when they come. Counseling would help them to equip themselves to face the travails of the future life.

The Department of Philosophy organized an Inter College Philosophical Exchange Programme where Prof. Minakshi Pramanick, a faculty of the neighbouring Narasimha Dutta College in Howrah delivered a special lecture on Intelligence. The students were highly benefited from a series of lectures from her. It is a matter of pride for the Department as she is an alumnus of this Department.
